Trims and Powertrains
The ’23 Sonata’s five trim levels are the SE, SEL, SEL Plus, N Line, and Limited. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine sits under the hood of the SE and SEL, making 191 horsepower and 181 lb.-ft of torque. In the meantime, the SEL Plus and Limited move up to a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 180 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission completes the powertrain for either of these engines.
The performance-focused Sonata N Line really goes for it with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder powerplant making 290 horsepower and 311 lb.-ft. of torque. This extra output is managed by an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The EPA has estimated fuel economy for the SE at 28 mpg around town and 38 mpg on the open road, while the SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited are rated for 27 city/37 highway. Fuel economy for the N Line is rated at 23 city/33 highway.
Standard Features and Options
The standard equipment for the SE includes LED exterior lighting, heated side mirrors with LED turn-signal indicators, sound-reducing windshield glass, premium fabric upholstery, six-way manually adjustable front seats, manual air conditioning, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, 60/40-split folding rear seats, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The SEL gets dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, a hands-free trunk release, sound-reducing glass on the front side windows, unique front and rear bumper fascia, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Opt for the SEL Convenience Package and you’ll get a power panoramic sunroof, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Hyundai Digital Key (keyless vehicle access via a smartphone app), and LED cabin lighting. The SEL Plus gets all of those options as standard equipment, along with microfiber seat inserts, aluminum sport pedals, black exterior accents, and 19-inch alloy wheels.
The N Line comes with everything listed for the SEL Plus as well as ambient interior lighting and some performance-oriented upgrades: a sport-tuned suspension, a quad-outlet dual-exhaust system, unique exterior treatments, a rear spoiler, and exclusive N-themed front sport seats with microfiber inserts. The Limited is equipped similar to the SEL Plus, but it has leather seats, advanced LED headlights and taillights, a six-way power front passenger seat, a driver’s position memory system, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, ambient interior lighting, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
Advanced Safety Technology
SmartSense, Hyundai’s grouping of advanced driver-support technologies, is standard on every 2023 Sonata. Besides automatic high beams, its features consist of forward collision-avoidance assist (with pedestrian/cyclist/junction turning detection), lane-keeping and lane-following assist, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, adaptive cruise control, driver attention warning, safe exit warning, and rear occupant alert. The N Line and Limited get highway driving assist. The Limited alone gets Remote Smart Park Assist (which remotely maneuvers the car in and out of tight parking spaces), reverse parking collision-avoidance assist, a blind-spot view monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and a surround-view monitor.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Infotainment for the Sonata centers on an 8-inch touchscreen in the SE and a 10.25-inch setup with navigation in the higher trims. The SE and SEL get a six-speaker audio system, while the SEL Plus, N Line, and Limited have a 12-speaker Bose unit. All trims come with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a USB port. The SEL and higher trims get SiriusXM satellite radio and access to Hyundai Bluelink connected services. Starting with the SEL with the Convenience Package and continuing up the trim ladder, wireless device charging and a second-row USB port are added.
