Buying on a budget doesn’t have to mean sacrificing quality and features, and the 2022 Hyundai Accent is proof. This subcompact sedan isn’t just eye-catching, it’s also highly efficient and packed with quality. Best of all, its starting price is well below the $20,000 mark, so it’s a great option for the budget-minded. The Accent has been one of the industry’s most respected commuter cars for nearly three decades, and while crossovers are currently red-hot sellers, the Accent does the affordable sedan segment justice, to say the least. Not only that, but unlike many of its rivals, the ’22 Accent adds peace of mind as a bonus, thanks to Hyundai’s industry-leading warranty coverage (5 years/60,000 miles basic and 10 years/100,000 miles powertrain). Accent owners save even more cash, as a complimentary maintenance plan covering 3 years/36,000 miles of factory-scheduled services (oil and filter changes and tire rotations) is also included.

Mechanical Specs and Fuel Economy

Hyundai’s 2022 Accent is a front-wheel drive subcompact sedan made in a threesome of trim levels: the SE, SEL, and Limited. Their powertrain consists of a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine (120 hp) and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). According to the EPA, the Accent returns a noteworthy 33 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway, making it one of the most efficient cars in its class.

This entry-level trim has the expected basic equipment with a few modern conveniences. It gets cloth seats with a 60/40-split fold-down rear seatback to accommodate oversized items through the trunk. Some other amenities worth a mention are the power-adjustable side mirrors, audio controls mounted on the steering wheel, power windows, USB and MP3 auxiliary input jacks, and a backup camera that goes above the minimum requirement with helpful dynamic guidelines. The infotainment system has the necessities: Bluetooth for hands-free phone use and audio streaming, plus a sound system with four speakers. Hyundai adds a full array of airbags plus these systems for safer and more confident driving: hill start assist, vehicle stability management, and traction control.

The SEL gives its drivers a bit more with automatic headlights, a driver’s side auto-up window, fog lights, heated exterior mirrors with a helpful blind-spot mirror on the driver’s-side, a storage console with a sliding armrest, a passenger-side seatback pocket, and two USB charging ports. The infotainment system moves up to a 7-inch touchscreen and adds voice recognition technology and smartphone integration (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), SiriusXM satellite radio, and another pair of speakers.

Heated front seats and a hands-free trunk elevate the status of the Limited trim, which also get, LED exterior lights, a power sunroof, integrated turn-signal indicators for the exterior mirrors, keyless entry, push-button start, automatic climate control, and a debuting feature, an anti-theft engine immobilizer. The infotainment system is unchanged from the SEL’s, but forward collision-avoidance assist is added in the safety department.
