2019 Hyundai Sonata

2019 Hyundai Sonata

Hyundai's well-appointed and sharp-looking midsized sedan gives its competition a real run for its money, for its list of standard equipment and overall value. The 2019 Hyundai Sonata returns with an updated appearance to take on rivals such as the Toyota Camry, which it beats on pricing and trunk size, and the Honda Accord, which has a smaller gas tank and larger price than the Sonata. The Korean car also beats every competitor hands down with its unmatched 10-year/100,000-mile warranty.

Trims and Standard Features

There are six '19 Sonata trims: SE, Eco, SEL, Sport+, Limited, and Limited 2.0T+. The SE, SEL, Sport+, and Limited have a 1.6-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine; the Eco has a 1.6-liter turbo engine, and the Limited 2.0+ has a 2.0-liter turbo engine. They all use a six-speed SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission, but the Eco trim has a specialized version. As its name attests, the Eco leads the Sonata pack in fuel economy, achieving up to 37 mpg on the highway and 28 mpg around town according to EPA ratings.

Standard-feature highlights on the base SE include a backup camera, blind-spot monitor, 7-inch touchscreen audio/entertainment/communication system, and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SEL gets a considerable boost in amenities, with wireless device charging, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, a hands-free auto-open trunk lid, push-button start, LED daytime running lights, and heated power side mirrors. The Eco trim moves to a turbocharged engine, and the Sport+ changes up its look a bit with race-inspired elements such as chrome rocker panels, dual exhaust pipes with chrome tips, and a power tilt/slide sunroof.

Moving up the ladder, the Limited trim receives ventilated front seats and additional active safety technology: lane keep assist, auto high beams, Dynamic Bending Light headlight technology, and smart cruise control. The top-tier Limited 2.0+ has the 2.0-liter turbo engine, rear parking sensors, a panoramic sunroof, rear side window shades, an upgraded Infinity audio system, and leather seating.

Passenger Comfort/Cargo Space

With class-leading passenger volume and trunk volume, the 2019 Hyundai Sonata is comfortable for daily commuting, long family road trips, and everything in between. Luxury amenities start to appear immediately above the base level, with heated seats, heated steering wheel, heated side mirrors, and wireless device charging.

Technology and Safety

All 2019 Sonatas get a user-friendly infotainment system complete with USB ports, Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Models above the base SE also get wireless charging and SiriusXM satellite radio; the top-of-the-line Limited 2.0+ comes with an integrated navigation system with 8-inch touchscreen.

Although the base trim includes a rearview camera and blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change alert, the trims above it stack up more active-safety features, both standard and optional, ranging from smart cruise control to rear parking sensors. The Sonata body is built for optimal passenger protection, with a full array of airbags, front and rear crumple zones, and an energy-absorbing steering column.
