2019 Hyundai Elantra

Overview

The redesigned 2019 Hyundai Elantra starts the compact sedan's sixth generation with a sportier appearance and attitude. It has a new look for the hood, grille, fascia, front fenders, trunk, headlights, and taillights to add athletic style. The affordable four-door continues to combine great fuel economy with fine standard features, including active safety technology. It's even still available in a stick-shift transmission, for those who prefer to have complete control of their gear changes.

Trims and Standard Features

The '19 Elantra trims are the SE, SEL, Value Edition, Eco, Sport, and Limited, and they all come with the Korean automaker's stellar 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, known as America's Best Warranty. This coverage compliments the 5-year/60,000-mile limited warranty and 5 years (unlimited miles) of 24/7 roadside assistance coverage. The base SE offers a choice of transmission (manual or automatic), daytime running lights, a center armrest with storage, a rearview camera, and an audio system with a 5-inch high-resolution touchscreen. The SEL upgrades that touchscreen to 7 inches and adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, automatic headlights, and a blind-spot monitor.

The Value Edition packs in a lot of features without breaking the bank: hands-free trunk release (exclusive to its class), dual automatic climate control, a tilting/sliding power moonroof, push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob, and heated front seats. Buyers of the Eco edition, with its highly efficient 1.4-liter turbo engine, will enjoy the best gas mileage in the entire Elantra lineup, as it's EPA rated to achieve up to 32 mpg city/40 mpg highway. The fuel efficiency stats on the other trims range from 26 city/36 highway/29 combined to 29 city/38 highway/33 combined. The Sport edition comes with a 1.6-liter 201-horsepower turbo engine, a race-themed interior, and a choice of stick or auto transmission.

Technology and Safety

Hyundai's SmartSense active safety suite packs in a lot of impressive crash-mitigating technologies to keep the occupants of the Elantra as safe as possible; it's standard on all trims but the base level (which still gets a backup camera like the rest). There's lane departure intervention, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and a blind spot monitor.

The redesigned audio/information system with six speakers is the command center for music, smartphone use, and navigation. The Limited trim naturally gets the most features for this system, with standard navigation, an 8-inch high-resolution touchscreen, premium Infinity sound, eight speakers, Qi-compatible wireless device charging, and Clari-Fi Music Restoration Technology.

Passenger Comfort/Cargo Space

The ergonomic situation has been improved inside the 2019 Hyundai Elantra, with user-friendly adjustments for the center stack, gauges, and instrument cluster. Passenger and cargo space are generous within the class. It's also a quieter car now, as Hyundai added more insulation during as part of the redesign to absorb road sound.
